LAKE KARIBA AND MUTUSADONA NATIONAL PARK
Lake Kariba is the largest man-made lake in the world by volume and 4th largest man-made lake in the world. The lake was formed between 1958 and 1963 after damming the Mighty Zambezi River in order to generate hydro-electric power. There are many stories and legends attached to the dam construction. The name Kariba is thought to come from a corrupted version of the Shona word, Kariva- which means trap. The local Tonga people believe that the dam wall separates the serpentine river god, Nyaminyami, from his wife, trapping him on one side of the wall and thus the wall is doomed to break, as evidenced by the occasional earth tremors felt in the area. Tonga mythology believes that this is Nyaminyami trying to reach his wife, but when he can’t get through the wall he turns around with such fury that the Earth around Kariba shakes and rumbles.
Matusadona was proclaimed a non-hunting area on the 7th November 1958 before the dam was built. Located on the shores of the lake, the Matusadona National Park has ready supply of regenerative grasses as a source of food and an abundance of water from the lake, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, impala and other plains game have thrived and with them, the predators. The lake is teeming with massive Nile crocodiles, hippos, herds of swimming elephants and exceptional bird life.
