On a constant quest for greener grazing land and water, some 6 million hooves joined by over 200,000 zebras pound the earth through the vast Serengeti in Tanzania and open plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara each year. In one of the greatest en mass movements in the world, the wildebeest and zebra herds travel throughout the calendar year clockwise through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The peak viewing seasons are in the dry periods of January-March in the Southern Serengeti, when the herds gather to calve and the predators slink around looking for young prey and then again July-October in the north (and into the Masai Mara on the Kenyan side of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem) when the herds brave the steep banks and watchful crocodiles as they cross the Mara and Talek rivers.
Dramatic scenes play out, both on land and of course in the waters during river crossings. Cheetah, leopard and lion stalk the herds that are ripe for the picking, and the hyena wait in the shadows to take advantage of the big cats’ hard work after a kill. A Great Migration Safari to Tanzania, Kenya or both is an adventure that leaves you spectacular photos and memories that are nothing short of a trip of a lifetime. By land on a luxury, photographic, family or mobile safari, the Great Migration is not to be missed.
