In October 2018, the Singita Grumeti Fund and BRAVE hosted the inaugural Serengeti Girls Run, an all-women run across the Serengeti wilderness to raise funds for girl and women empowerment programs in Tanzania.
Runners of all levels joined this once-in-a-lifetime event that took place across the vast Serengeti plains, a multi-stage running journey of women united for a common cause.
These women joined this Safari with a Purposein support of women’s empowerment, but what awaited them was so much more. Witnessing the immense power of uniting as one and the kinship shared amongst women from all walks of life was nothing short of incredible.
The first day of this unique experience included a solidarity ‘fun run’ with girls from the local community. Hundreds of high school girls arrived for inspiring empowerment talks and a 3km run through the village with the participants. The day ended with a career fair where participants could share their stories to inspire learners to aim for a brighter future. |
Each day, the group would set out running with the freedom to choose their pace and distance. Accompanied by the Singita Grumeti Fund anti-poaching scouts all along the way, the runners had the opportunity to witness the abundance of wildlife while traversing the grassy plains on foot.
Evenings were spent sharing incredible stories of the day around the fire at Singita Explore, a close-to-nature tented camp that offers a return to the true essence of safari.
With the support of one another, each woman crossed the finish line at the top of Koroya Hill with a proud sense of achievementknowing that they had made a contribution to the empowerment of women and girls in rural Tanzania.
Having arrived as a group of strangers, they departed as life-long friends.
The power of this cause brought women from all over the world together to unite for a better future.
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
